Recently I've been reading several books set in the North Carolina and Tennessee Appalachian Mountains, and they have made a big impression on me. They've been hauntingly descriptive of this old and beautiful environment, and at the same time they've evoked themes of universal import. The tough, yet vulnerable, people imagined in these pages are richly characterized as they brave the tribulations of their lives. Here are some suggestions for novels about this region:
Long Man by Amy Greene
A Land More Kind Than Home by Wiley Cash
The Cove by Ron Rash
Guests on Earth by Lee Smith
The Road From Gap Creek by Robert Morgan
King's Mountain by Sharyn McCrumb
